Giving the Gift of Literacy

Although it’s the holiday season and many people are busy preparing their gifts for family and friends, it’s time we keep in mind those of us who don’t have the privilege of giving. It’s so easy to get mixed up in who wants what candle and what to give to that awkward relative that doesn’t seem to actually like anything that we often forget that there are others in this world who are struggling to live their lives. It’s not fair that some cannot live to their full potential, it’s not fair that there are children out there who do not get the chance to discover the magic of losing yourself in a book. Remember why we celebrate these holidays this season, recognize the privileges that you’ve had due to being born in a certain country into the family that you have. Many people aren’t as lucky. But it is up to the privileged to do what we can in order to make the lives of others better. We ask that you reach out a hand this holiday season and give a gift that will change lives. It’s incredible the power that we have in this life to change the lives of others and we should take advantage of that as much as possible.

About Reading Hamlets-A site to discuss better education in Nigeria.

Reading Hamlets is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization led by women, dedicated to ending the cycle of poverty through literacy, by providing books to children, with a special emphasis on girls, living in low income areas in rural Nigeria. Reading Hamlets aims at promoting reading & improving literacy in schools & homes across Nigeria through advocacy and outreach plans. Our outreach plans include book donations, building libraries, empowering young girls, literacy campaigns, and reading clubs. Reading Hamlets (formerly known as Curefo Reading Foundation), founded by Christina Ude, was born in 2008 following a trip she made to an orphanage in Lagos, Nigeria and incorporated as a non profit organization in 2011.
